Dr. Wu (pictured left) is a gastroenterologist and Director of the Molecular Biology Core at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania Health System. His most current research is focused on the association between long-term dietary patterns and the bacteria of the human gut. The research study is ongoing and has received funding from the Human Microbiome Project, along with other federal sources of support.

Dr. Greger (pictured right) (editor of nutritionfacts.org) is a physician, author, and internationally recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety, and public health issues. A founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, Dr. Greger is licensed as a general practitioner specializing in clinical nutrition. Currently he serves as the Director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture at the Humane Society of the United States.

Dr. Shepherd (pictured bottom) is a neuroscientist and researcher specializing in basic experimental and theoretical research on neuron microcircuitry at the Yale School of Medicine. He is the author of Neurogastronomy: How the Brain Creates Flavor and Why It Matters which outlines a new appreciation of the extensive but largely hidden “flavor system” in the human brain and suggests a new field he has called “neurogastronomy,” which has the potential to enhance understanding of the factors contributing to obesity and other eating disorders.

Milton Mills, MD
Director of Preventive Medicine, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
Education: MD, Stanford University
Dr. Milton Mills is a practicing critical care physician at Fairfax Hospital in Virginia and free clinics in Washington, D.C., and director of preventive medicine at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Dr. Mills recommends to his patients to move towards plant-based diets and travels around the country speaking at hospitals, churches, and community centers.

Gidon Eshel, PhD
Professor of Environmental and Urban Studies and Physics at Bard College

Gidon Eshel is Professor of Environmental and Urban Studies and Physics at Bard College. Eshel examines numerically food production’s impacts on the physical environment. His cutting edge research investigates the energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, land and water use, and biogeochemical cycle perturbations of animal and plant based diets. His training as an applied mathematician and geophysicist, coupled with his expertise in agriculture and climate change, make him a leader in food reform and environmental policy.

William Crouch, University of Oxford DPhil candidate, is the President and founder of 80,000 Hours. Crouch is a Trustee of the Centre for Effective Altruism; research associate at the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics; and co-founder of the organization Giving What We Can. His research in ethics at the University of Oxford helped develop the grounding for both organizations. Currently, he is a visiting student at New York University and a recipient of The Fulbright Program scholarship.

Shelly Kagan is the Clark Professor of Philosophy at Yale. He is the author of the textbook Normative Ethics and teaches a seminar on Animal Ethics. His work centers on the debate between consequentialist and deontological moral theories, with publications on the nature of well-being, moral desert, utopia, and the connections between Kantianism and consequentialism.

Jeff McMahan is Professor of Philosophy at Rutgers. He is the author of The Ethics of Killing: Problems at the Margins of Life and has recently published a controversial piece in The New York Times on predation and wild animal suffering: The Meat Eaters.

At New York University, Dale Jamieson is the Director of Environmental Studies, a Professor of Environmental Studies and Philosophy, an Affiliated Professor of Law, and the Director for the newly created Animal Studies Initiative . He is the author of Morality’s Progress: Essays on Humans, Other Animals, and the Rest of Nature.

Lori Gruen is Professor of Philosophy, Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Environmental Studies at Wesleyan. She is also coordinator of Wesleyan Animal Studies and Director of the Ethics in Society Project. Her work lies at the intersection of ethical theory and ethical practice, with a particular focus on ethical issues that impact those often overlooked in traditional ethical investigations, e.g. women, people of color, non-human animals. She recently wrote Ethics and Animals: An Introduction.

In 2011, Leahy conducted the initial case research and development for an antitrust class action alleging a price fixing scheme by the American dairy industry. Leahy also currently serves as counsel for The Humane Party, where her duties include legal tasks related to the establishment and popularization of a new and emergent national political party.
Leahy is the author of “Large-Scale Farmed Animal Abuse and Neglect, Law and its Enforcement,” Journal of Animal Law and Ethics, University of Pennsylvania Law School, Fall 2011, and she is a co-author of, “Farm-Animal Welfare, Legislation and Trade,” Journal of Law and Contemporary Problems, Duke University School of Law, Spring, 2007.

Professor Cassuto teaches in the areas of property, professional responsibility, animal law, water law, international comparative law, and legal and environmental theory. He directs the Brazil American Institute for Law and Environment (BAILE), a cooperative endeavor with the Getulio Vargas Foundation School of Law in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He was a Fulbright Fellow at FGV Direito Rio, in Rio de Janeiro Brazil in 2010, is a visiting professor at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, and is the Class of 1946 Distinguished Visiting Professor of Environmental Law at Williams College.

Lewis Bollard is a third year student at Yale Law school and former Associate Consultant at Bain & Company. He won the 2012 Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Contest. The contest, sponsored by the national public interest law firm Public Justice, offers law students the opportunity to investigate and offer solutions to injustices inflicted on the environment. Bollard’s essay is titled “Ag-Gag: The Unconstitutionality of Laws Restricting Undercover Investigations on Farms.”
CEO & President, The Humane Society of the United States

Wayne Pacelle, Yale ’87, is the president and chief executive officer of The Humane Society of the United States. Pacelle took office June 1, 2004 after serving for nearly 10 years as the organization’s chief lobbyist and spokesperson.
During his tenure as HSUS president and CEO, Pacelle has spurred major growth for the organization, which is now the nation’s largest animal protection organization with 11 million members and constituents, annual revenue of $160 million, and assets of more than $200 million. Pacelle helped engineer the corporate combination of The HSUS and The Fund for Animals as well as the Doris Day Animal League.
Since 1990, Pacelle has played a central role in more than 25 successful statewide ballot measure campaigns. In 2008, he led the effort to pass Proposition 2 in California, halting the intensive confinement of 20 million farm animals.
He and the HSUS have worked for the passage of more than 500 new state laws since 2005 and more than 25 federal statutes to protect animals in the last decade.
In 2008, the Los Angeles Times reported, “Pacelle has retooled a venerable organization seen as a mild-mannered protector of dogs and cats into an aggressive interest group flexing muscle in state legislatures and courtrooms.” In 2007, The New York Times reported, “The arrival of Wayne Pacelle as head of the Humane Society in 2004 both turbo-charged the farm animal welfare movement and gave it a sheen of respectability.” In 2008, Supermarket News included Pacelle on its annual Power 50 list of influential individuals in food marketing, writing that “there’s no denying his growing influence on how animal agriculture is practiced in the United States.”
